Allow me to introduce a member of my own little flock. You may recognize her as a Plymouth Rock or Barred Rock, but we know her as "Star."As the proper name suggests, the Plymouth Rock originated in New England in the middle of the 19th century.
Star is a dual-purpose breed which means she is good for breakfast and dinner (if you know what I mean). She has been bread for her egg and meat production. This is a big bird! We hold our chickens a lot, they are as much pets as anything, and she is heavy. We love Star because she is the perfect stereotype of a farm chicken. She is hardy, docile, not prone to broodiness and friendly, and she lays well.
We have never had a rooster in our flock so in that case one of the hens picks up the role as leading lady. Star was not the one for the job. She is certainly a follower and does not think for herself. If the lead chicken says jump, Star doesn't even bother to ask how high, she just jumps. This is not the hen you want your teenage daughter to model herself after. Star is also not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to getting out of sticky situations. If there is a hole in the fence, everyone figures out how to squeeze under except Star. Poor Star. However, we love her anyway. She does the thing chickens do best and that is scratch and scratch and scratch. Star is a lovely hen to watch in the cool of the evening as she pecks around the grass as a happy chicken should.
